Count Down to July

July is going to be a big month!

Not only am I counting down the days to my 12 hour race on July 4th (Qu'est-ce que c'est? 12 Hour Race), now I am counting down the days to my son's USA Track and Field Regionals on July 7th!

This past weekend my son competed in the USATF Junior Olympics South Carolina State Meet (long name...).  He competed in three events: mini javelin, 1500 meter run and shot put.

At the beginning of the season I had talked to my son about the fact that he was going to be the youngest in his age group and that he should treat this year like a "rookie season" - he seems to understand things like this better when I use sports terms :)

Well, he did exactly the opposite and now we are heading to Virginia for the USATF Regional Championship for javelin and shot put!  Oh, and his team (Mount Pleasant Track Club) won their eighth state championship!

Yes, I am a proud dad and if you follow me on Facebook you are probably getting tired of me talking about him all the time - oh well :)

As far as the Qu'est-ce que c'est? 12 Hour Race, I have been trying to ramp up my mileage to get ready.  I have done a lot of back to back long runs (10/12, 14/12, 12/18, 16/16, 16/18), but not a lot of runs in the 20's.  I really want to get in a 20+ miler this weekend.

I have just not been really motivated lately.

Maybe I will try thinking of my son crushing the shot put this past weekend!

  1. The pics are great, and talking about your son on facebook and being proud is totally okay! I'm not a parent, I just volunteer coach, and I know my friends probably got tired of me being super proud and bragging on kids that aren't even mine, haha. That's awesome that he made regionals in two events, and congrats on your overall win Saturday too!

Good luck with your 12 hour race- thinking about your sun crushing the shot put is a great strategy because kiddos are inspiring like that.
