My Running Family

My wife is running a marathon...  MY WIFE IS RUNNING A MARATHON!!!

Yep, my wife (aka "I hate running and running related people things") has not only decided to run a marathon, she has signed up for the Disney Marathon in January!

She's going to kill me for posting anything about her on my blog, but this is too cool not to share.

MUSC Boot Camp
Now, my wife has run 5k's and 10k's and has done Boot Camp (she even works out at home).  But, during all of those things she has always complained about the running parts (really, she even complains about the running parts of the races...).

When it comes to running, my wife is one of the most sarcastic and cynical people that I know.  But when she sets her mind on doing something she will not and can not be deterred (although it does have to be her idea...).

My wife and I at the end of the Monumental Marathon
Don't get me wrong, my wife is very supportive about me running.  She looks at me like I am crazy sometimes, but she is an angle angel when it comes to understanding my obsession with this sport (I mean, I even watch running on TV).

I wanted to help get her started on her training so I set up a running schedule to get her base mileage up.  I wanted her to start slow and build up.  She tends to do things all out and then feel the effects of the workout for days (and even weeks) later.

Did I mention that my wife had major back surgery a few years ago???

So I had her start with just a one mile jog around the neighborhood.  This drove her nuts because in her mind she should have gone out and done a ten miler to get started.  But (after arguing with me) she went out and did it.  She moved up to two miles and then three this week (she will be doing the Floppin' Flounder 5K on Sullivan's Island this weekend).

In addition to the schedule, I bought her a book called "The Nonrunners Marathon Guide for Women: Get Off Your Butt and On with Your Training".  Amazingly, the author may be more sarcastic and cynical than my wife (I know, how is that possible?).

In the past few days my wife has read about half of the book and has read it to me and my son while riding in the car and at the dinner table (again, how is that possible?).  I think she likes that someone who hates running as much as her has written a book about running!

The book cracks me up and I love that she is reading it out loud to us.  As geeky as it sounds, "its fun for the whole family".

This summer is going to be very interesting.  My son is running track (state meet next weekend), I am training for an Ultra and now my wife is training for the Rock 'n Roll Savannah Half Marathon in November (almost forgot to mention that) and the Disney Full Marathon in January.
