Last night I met my MooreOnRunners Intermediate Group for Hill Repeats and Speed Drills. The weather was perfect and we had a great turnout.

There are all kinds of excuses you can use to not run and coming up with one when you know you are about to do a hard workout is really easy. So seeing so many runners there, ready to go, really was amazing.

We warmed up with a short run and then headed to the bottom of the Cooper River Bridge. The workout is pretty simple: 90 seconds hard pace up and walk back down for a recovery x 6.

A lot of the group didn't have watches (even though I reminded them to bring them!) to time themselves going up so I brought a whistle (I never get to use my whistle).

The hard part of this workout is not stopping or slowing down too much before the end of the 90 seconds. It
might not seem that long at first, but it seems like it's an eternity the more repeats you do.

The group ran really strong. I was super impressed with their effort and how they stayed with it for the whole workout.

After the group finished, we ran back to the parking lot and I set up my cones for speed drills. I almost laughed when I saw their faces :)

Again, the group stayed with me as I had them do sprints, cross overs, sliders, and bounding drills. When we
finished I could tell they had worked hard.

One of the amazing things is that most of this group just finished my Couch to 5K program at the beginning of May! Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

The group will continue building their base mileage for the rest of the month and they have decided to train
for a 5-6 mile midnight run in July.

My favorite part of coaching this group is that I get to throw out some crazy ideas for a goal race or run and
they get to pick what they want to do as a group. The only rules are that it has to be something a little out of the ordinary and it has to be an adventure!

Plus, I get to say I'm running with a bunch of MooreOns!

Two months ago I started a journey with a group of people with a goal of running a 5K race. Thursday, I watched that group complete that goal and become the runners I knew they could be...

That first morning I watched all the cars as they pulled into the parking lot. I watched as they sat in their cars not knowing exactly what to do. Slowly, they exited their cars and made their way over to me and entered my world.

Each week the group became more confident. There were bumps in the road. Each workout was harder than the next. Some members were disappointed in how fast they were running. Some had pains that they had never experienced. Some just doubted their own abilities. Each week either I spent time with the person, Peyton picked them up, or another group member moved in to give support. This is the magic of group runs...

After weeks of training, they gathered for their race.

I walked up to the group for final instructions and to get them warmed up. As I looked at them with pride, I noticed something strange. They all had the same shirts on. To my surprise they had created shirts with my logo and "Team Noah" written on the back. I was completely overwhelmed. It took everything for me to keep it together...

After their warm up, they lined up with over 800 people to run the Catch the Leprechaun 5K.

They were all smiling!

I watched them take off and then waited at the end for them to come back. It was such a rush to see each one of them finish! From my nine year old son breaking his own PR to my oldest participant at seventy one finishing first in her age group it was just amazing.

I saw people who I had coached in prior groups come through and I watched as each and every group member ran through the finish line.

Some were faster than others, some were smiling, some were laughing, some were grimacing and some were crying.

They were all runners...

Sunday I met with my Couch to 5K group to begin our second week of training.

C25K Group

Over thirty people signed up for my class!

It's an awesome group with some really funny people that keep me laughing the whole time I'm out with them.

I'm coaching them this month and next month for the Catch the Leprechaun 5K in March.  I love seeing them progress over this short period of time and can't wait for them to run this awesome race.
Taking over the streets

One of the coolest things is watching all the cars pull into the parking lot for our group runs.

It pumps me up every time!

The other thing that I love is watching our huge group run down the road.

Coming back from an awesome run

It is so freaking inspiring!

I coach this type of program because I believe in the group training concept and I like the slow progression of the build up of mileage.

This is what worked for me and as much as I am doing this for all these new runners, getting to share my passion for running is a pretty big treat for me...

Last night as I was getting off work I started to feel a little rundown.

I had already met my running partners, CSR and Ninja Stuntman, for a 5:45am tempo run and then ran a pace run on my own in the afternoon.  Now it was time to get ready for another run...

I looked at my running bag and kind of just sat their in a daze.  I even sent a text to CSR saying I should have thought this through a little better.
Wednesday Night Work Group + 3 not pictured!

Then I saw someone go by my office in running gear.

I immediately perked up.

It wasn't just another run, I was meeting a group of people from my office for a group workout!

Last week I started a Wednesday night group for people from my office to work on walking and running.  Twelve people showed up last week.  It was amazing!

So I put on my running clothes and headed over to Colonial Lake to meet everyone.

As I waited, I only saw three people at our starting point.  I was a little disappointed, but it was cold and at least there were three people that showed up.

As we started to go over the workout, more people started showing up.  By the time we started, there were fourteen people from my office walking and running!!!

How freaking cool it that?!

We had a great workout and I just could not stop smiling.  I'm still smiling writing this blog post now!

Hum, I wonder if they would be cool with being referred to as the MooreOn Group???

This month I started coaching a Couch to 5K program in Downtown Charleston (SC).  It has been an incredible experience and very motivating.

For the past two Thursday nights I have shown up to see over 25 people ready to run - absolutely amazing!

During this time I have written two blog posts for the coaching site www.CharlestonRuns.com to share with the group.  Both blog posts dealt with stretching and covered what I showed the group.

Here is one of the posts in short form, if you want to read the originals just go to www.CharlestonRuns.com

There is also a cool post that Coach Greg wrote welcoming me to the coaching ranks!

Kiss My Glute, Just Don’t Pull It!
Posted on December 12th, 2011 CoachNoah
That soreness in your backside may not be your boss.  It could be that your gluteus maximus and gluteus medius are just tight (oh the jokes just keep coming)…pain-in-the-glute
One of the places you may feel tightness and a loss of flexibility after you run is in your glutes.   This may lead to back pain and stiffness, especially when you get up from your office chair or first thing in the morning as you get out of bed.
There are a lot of benefits to stretching each day and having an after run stretching routine.
  • Increased mobility
  • Reduced stiffness
  • Reduced injuries
I shared a few simple stretches last week with our Couch to 5K group and added one more to the routine:
Sitting Glute Stretchglute-stretch
Sit on the ground with both legs stretched out.  Cross your left leg over your right leg while raising your left knee to your chest.  Gently pull your knee closer to your chest.  You will feel the stretch in your glutes at this point.  You can also slightly rotate your upper body (while holding your knee) to the right for a deeper stretch.  Hold for 15-20 seconds and switch legs.
As always, there should never be any bouncing while you stretch.
Add this to your routine and tell stiffness and injuries to kiss your gluteus maximus (and medius)!
